Granny Smith Apples

Great for summer salads or winter puddings. They have a distinctive bright green skin and crisp white flesh. They're quite tart in taste due to their low sugar content. This low sugar content also means they will break down to a puree when cooked, making them good for or apple pies, sauces and crumbles. Available all year round.

How to buy

When choosing apples, go for those with firm, smooth and clean, unblemished skin.

How to store

Apples will keep fresh and juicy if stored in the crisper section of your fridge.

How to cook

For a quick winter crumble to fight those colds, cook peeled, cored Granny Smith Apples with a little water and honey until soft. Sprinkle with muesli. Bake until golden.

For apple sauce, cook 5 Granny Smith Apples, peeled, cored and chopped, with 1/3 cup water and 2 tablespons sugar until soft.

Go well with

Pork, cheese, winter spices like cinnamon or cloves.
