Coeliac disease is a permanent intestinal intolerance to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. The lining of the small intestine is damaged by gluten and this can interfere with the absorption of nutrients. A gluten free diet is the only treatment. Blood screening tests have shown that coeliac disease affects approximately one in 100 Australians.
