How did it all start?
A former photojournalist from New York City, Burt Shavitz had moved out to Maine in search of a quieter, more simple way of life. He took up beekeeping and sold quarts of honey off the tailgate of his pick-up truck to make ends meet. Shortly after he first met Roxanne in the 1980s, she set out to learn the business of bees and discovered a cache of beeswax that Burt had amassed and stored in his honey house. She started to make candles for local markets and production rapidly expanded. In the late 1980s, Roxanne discovered a 19th century book of home-made personal care recipes and that's when the Burt's Bees we now know and love really began.
All-natural ingredients?
Burt's Bees use honey, beeswax, royal jelly and bee pollen in their products because of their well-known benefits. But what's so good about bees and their wax, pollen, honey and royal jelly? Here are a few facts we've gathered for you:
Honey
Honey is a natural humectant, which means it helps to retain moisture in the skin. Over a normal day, your skin will show dehydration quickly by losing its glow and texture. Honey is the secret weapon to fight the sapping dryness of air conditioning and both hot and cold weather conditions.Royal Jelly
Royal Jelly is the food of baby bees - or more correctly, for the larvae that will grow up to become bees. It's a myth that it's only fed to Queen Bees to be (sorry!) although if a queen is needed then the chosen larvae will receive only Royal Jelly to eat and that's what triggers her development as a queen. Royal Jelly is packed with trace elements, has antibacterial and antibiotic properties and even contains traces of Vitamin C.Beeswax
Another natural humectant, beeswax is the result of hard work by young bees in the hive. Did you know that to produce the wax, the bees must consume about eight times the same mass in honey? And we are told that they have to fly over 241,000 kilometres to collect enough nectar to produce around a half kilo of wax!Bee Pollen
Collected from the male parts of flowers, bees use the pollen as their protein fix. Bee pollen is credited with its antibacterial properties. On top of this, it helps to soothe and smooth the appearance of skin, helping to restore your healthy glow.
